Heartburst featured at the RAM Gallery
EXHIBITION
Accompanied by visual representations of the design process and photographs capturing its inception at Black Rock City, Heartburst graced the RAM Gallery from October 20th to November 18th, 2023. Friends, family, local artists, and business owners converged to explore the 900-square-foot structure, immersing themselves in the project’s passion.
Following its debut in Black Rock City, the Heartburst team eagerly sought to extend the project’s reach to a new community. Dave Bantz, OU principal and Bakersfield local, collaborated with Rachel McCullah Wainwright and Henry Wainwright, owners of the RAM Gallery, to materialize this vision. A segment of Heartburst journeyed to Bakersfield for the installation, where over a weekend, it was brought to life. Using a quarter of Heartburst and a reflective, mirror-like material, guests were able to encounter the full spectacular through an optical illusion.
Gallery visitors were treated to a comprehensive journey of Heartburst’s evolution, from its conceptualization to its physical manifestation, as depicted through photographs and pieces of the construction process, such as mini 3D models and the marker used to locate where the Heartburst would be constructed. Guests had a tangible connection with the Heartburst story, exploring the structure and bamboo, which still had traces of playa dust.
As guests explored the exhibit, they were immersed in an atmosphere of creativity and innovation, finding a deep appreciation for the journey and passion that brought Heartburst to life.
PANEL DISCUSSION
On November 4th, OU Principals Christian Robert and Dave Bantz sat down with the Bakerfield community to answer questions and chat about the passion and story behind Heartburst, and the exhibition. Friends and family of OUers along with local artists and business owners gathered to hear the passion behind the 900 square foot structure and meet some of the team behind the spectacular.
“We are excited to see Heartburst come back to life in front of a great audience in Bakersfield and support Rachel’s incredible new gallery.” Christian Robert
“Sharing the story of Heartburst at the gallery today with the community was so special because we were able to touch on the incredible sustainable qualities of bamboo and how public art can bring people together.” Dave Bantz.
